Sometimes change arrives through a clear decision. Other times, it begins as a quiet feeling that something no longer fits, a curiosity about what else might be possible, or a growing awareness of what we want more or less of in our lives.
We can hold on to familiar ways of being because they offer certainty, even when we begin to feel drawn somewhere new. I want to share an excerpt about comfort zones that really resonates with me:
“Alas, the irony
of finding little to no real peace
little to no real growth
in these misleadingly comfortable realms.”
- The Mindful Collective Affirmations
Making room for change doesn't mean "preparing" or even knowing what comes next. Because, truly, we can't prepare for everything... As much as we may want to. But that's the beauty of being human; when something happens, we have an innate ability to adapt. Allowing yourself to explore what is shifting, what is calling for your attention, and what you might be ready to see differently is what life is all about. Let yourself see what comes from the exercise below:
Take a moment to reflect.
Answer any (or all) of the questions and permit yourself to explore without judgment or a need to make a decision. Notice what resonates, what feels uncomfortable, and what surprises you.
What feels different about me or my life than it did a year ago?
Is there something in my life that no longer feels like a fit?
What have I been curious about but haven’t allowed myself to explore?
If I weren’t worried about disappointing anyone or getting it wrong, what might I permit myself to consider?
What would I like to make more room for in this season of my life?
Is there anything I’m holding on to simply because it’s familiar?
Sit with what emerges.
Change doesn't always ask us to let go of something. Sometimes, it asks us to make space for something we haven’t met yet. You don’t need to know where a new possibility will lead to be curious about it.
What might I give myself permission to explore, without needing to know the outcome?
Let the question stay with you. Take your time discovering what it means for you.
